Active Ministry Alongside the Poor

When we minister alongside those who face the very real challenges of urban poverty and homelessness, we discover one of the surprises of apostolic life as a Salvatorian. We might initially go to the Cathedral Center to help others... what we discover, when we reflect upon it, is that it is WE who are changed!

Judy Sullivan is a part of the Sisters of the Divine Savior's new membership program. She ministers, alongside other Salvatorians and friends, at the Cathedral Center, a shelter program for women and their children experiencing homelessness in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Judy notes that our Salvatorian "charism," or gift from God to this world, includes being in solidarity with those who are marginalized. "We are in solidarity for hope and life," she says.

"Besides providing nourishment, such as a hot meal in the evening, or bag lunches for the next day as the women and children leave the Center, we also have the opportunity to visit with our guests. We share stories. Most importantly, we listen," shares Judy.

It's that "being there" aspect of ministry that offers Salvatorians and those who join us an opportunity to grow and change ourselves. Listening to others' stories with our heart and allowing those stories to touch and change our own lives is one way the women and children minister to us.

"Being at the Cathedral Center gives me a 'hands on' time to experience and renew the breadth of community. It keeps me focused to listen and to be aware of the need for advocacy for changes in our present system of dealing with homelessness," notes Judy. The Cathedral Center is unique in that it works to address the reason each person or family is seeking help. It directs them to a proper source of help, whether its physical, emotional, or mental help that's needed. "Sometimes one just needs that first 'push' to begin to think and work on a solution," Judy reflects.

The Salvatorian Sisters invite friends and other interested people to participate in this vital Central City ministry. It's a ministry that changes lives- our lives!
